The essential oil of sage is derived from the distillation of the herb and its flowers. It has a sweet, herbaceous aroma and possesses bactericidal, fungistatic, and virustatic properties.

It calms the nervous system and is used in cases of depression, anxiety, insomnia, and painful periods. It helps reduce hot flashes, night sweats, irritability, headaches, and dizziness.

Inhaling its aroma has mucolytic and decongestant effects, suggesting its use in cases of flu and colds. There is evidence that it enhances memory function and concentration while it may also stimulate sexual desire.

Additionally, it can relieve muscular pain, lower back pain, neck stiffness, cramps, and dysmenorrhea, by adding 2-3 drops to massage oil or body lotion.

It is used in facial creams for oily skin, balancing sebum production and acting astringently. It can be added to shampoos, revitalizing the natural color of the hair.

It is very potent and in large quantities can cause toxicity. With 2 drops in 100 ml of water, it can be used for gargles and washes in cases of toothache and mouth sores.

It combines very well with: bergamot, geranium, oregano, lavender, pine, frankincense, sandalwood, jasmine, and lemon.
