Description

Description

John Chrysostom, 4th-5th century A.D., in his sermons (Antioch and Constantinople) used images from the daily life of his time. Among the information he provides, he makes detailed references to the early Byzantine house (architecture and decoration).

Described are peristyle houses-domus (with atriums, reception rooms-tricliniums, gardens, porticoes, auxiliary spaces, bedrooms, and women's quarters), multi-story homes, farmhouses, simple houses, small huts, and shops-tabernae.

Additionally, we receive information about wall decoration (orthomarmoros, coloring, frescoes, portraits and images of saints, mosaics, curtains, and tapestries), floor decoration (marbles, mosaics, carpets), and ceiling decoration.

The furnishings of the early Byzantine house were rich: beds, couches-stibadia, small beds, tables, thrones, chairs, stools, boxes (chests), and wardrobes. Detailed descriptions are given about how they dined and entertained at banquets.

In the early Byzantine house, various vessels were used, both metal and ceramic, as well as luxurious silver and gold: cooking utensils, storage and transport containers, tableware, personal care items, portable heating vessels, and lamps.

The early Byzantine aristocratic house is structured and decorated according to Greco-Roman standards; however, gradually, the mythological themes in decoration are abandoned, and Christian symbols appear, which then dominate.
