Description

The ISL6264 is a two-phase buck controller with integrated gate drivers. It uses two interconnected channels to effectively double the output waveform frequency and reduce the output waveform width with fewer components, lower component cost, and smaller required footprint. The ISL6264 can also be configured as a single-phase controller for low-power CPU applications.

The heart of the ISL6264 is Intersil's patented R3 technology, the Ripple Regulator. Compared to the traditional multiphase buck regulator, the R3 technology has the fastest transient response due to variable frequency modulation command during a load disturbance.

To increase battery life, the ISL6264 supports PSI_L for deeper sleep state through automatic activation of different operational modes. During load operation, the regulator detects continuous conduction mode (CCM). During the deeper sleep state, the ISL6264 smoothly disables one phase and operates in single-phase diode emulation (DE) mode for maximum efficiency at light load.

A 6-bit digital-to-analog converter (DAC) allows for dynamic adjustment of the core output voltage from 0.375V to 1.55V. The system achieves 0.5% accuracy of the core output voltage during operation. A differential amplifier is provided for measuring the CPU temperature. This allows for precise measurement and adjustment of the voltage to the CPU according to AMD's mobile CPU specifications.

Current measurement can be performed either using the lossless DCR method or with precise resistors. An NTC thermistor network thermally compensates the gain and time constant of DCR variations.
