PLA (polylactic acid) is one of the oldest and most commonly used materials in the 3D printing community, mainly due to its flexibility and environmental friendliness. It is organic and biodegradable, and can easily be combined with other ingredients to influence its final properties, such as flexibility and metallic appearance.
The clear form of Real PLA is transparent and has a printing temperature between 195 - 205 degrees (depending on the characteristics of the hot end). The darker shades of Real may require a few extra degrees due to the coloring process. The filament should extrude smoothly and appear slightly glossy.
PLA is denser and more durable than ABS, but it is more brittle and prone to cracking under high loads. It is less resistant to external conditions (UV light and water) compared to other commonly used thermoplastic materials (See Nylon, ABS, and PETG).
PLA can be printed well on a cold surface using Blue Painters or Kapton tape, as well as most adhesive 3D printing labels. The use of sprays like 3DLAC on a glass base is recommended for convenience. A low bed temperature between 50 - 60 degrees also reduces the likelihood of warping and makes it easier to remove the final printed object once the print surface has cooled down.
