The oilcloth is intended to gently absorb the oil and holy myrrh from the child's body. Therefore, they must be made from high-quality cotton. A set of oilcloths consists of the oilcloth, the towel, the small towel, as well as the underwear that comes into direct contact with the child.

Cleaning the oilcloths after the ceremony is a small ritual, as according to tradition the godmother along with the mother must rinse them 3 times in the sea or river, in running water. The purpose is not to make them spotlessly clean, but to retain the scent of the myrrh & oil from the ceremony.

You should know that the holy myrrh used in the baptism is prepared every ten years at the Phanar by the Patriarch.

Tip for storing oilcloths: wrap them in garment storage paper along with white Marseille soap. This way, the oilcloths will smell of soap and myrrh.
