A small to medium-sized tree with a broad ovate crown, which can reach about 8 meters. The flowers are unusual for the species, large, vase-shaped, cream to light yellow. The base of the petal is often light yellow, while the edge is cream, giving the tree a "yellow" appearance. The flowers have a pleasant citrus-like fragrance.

The tree blooms quite abundantly even when young, ranking it as an attractive park tree. This magnolia variety was recently introduced from China under the name Fei Huang, belongs to the magnolia denudata group (Yulan magnolia), however, there is no available information regarding exact breeding details.

The flowers measure 15 cm in width and are vanilla yellow when fully open. The freshly opened buds have a deep yellow color, as do the stamens in the center of the flower. The petals are rather ovate with rounded edges.

Flowering occurs on bare branches with one or two small, shiny green leaves beneath the calyx. It is a late variety that blooms only in mid or late spring, usually from mid-May, thus avoiding potential damage from late frosts. The flowering period can be extended in older plants, as it tends to have two waves of flowering.
