Description & Specifications

Gabriele Esposito offers an overview of the military history of the Germanic peoples during this period and details the weapons and tactics they used on the battlefield. He begins by showing how, from very early on, the Germanic communities were strongly influenced by Celtic culture. He then describes the major military events, starting with the first significant encounter between the Germanic tribes and the Romans: the invasion of the Cimbri and the Teutons. Julius Caesar's campaigns against the Germanic groups seeking to enter France are described in detail, as well as the pivotal Battle of the Teutoburg Forest, which effectively halted Roman expansion into Germany and for centuries defined the Rhine as the boundary between Roman and Germanic cultures. The increasing pressure from Germanic raids and invasions was a major factor in the collapse of the Western Roman Empire.

The author's analysis explains how Germanic warriors managed to defeat Roman military forces on several occasions, gradually transforming the Roman Army from within and, after the fall of the Empire, creating new Romano-Germanic kingdoms throughout Europe. The evolution of Germanic weapons, equipment, and tactics is examined and depicted through dozens of color photographs of equipment reproductions in use.
