Knossos is one of the most important ancient monuments of the Mediterranean. It remained one of the largest settlements in Crete from the Neolithic era to the late Roman years, but beyond its size, it held particular significance in the mythological imagination of Greece and Rome as the seat of King Minos, the site of the Labyrinth, and the home of the Minotaur. The discovery of the ‘Palace of Minos’ by Sir Arthur Evans has irreversibly linked Knossos with the ‘lost’ civilization of the Bronze Age in Crete. The allure of this ‘lost civilization’, combined with the remarkable achievements of the artists and craftsmen of the ‘Minoan’ era, remains a significant draw for both scholars and others outside the academic world, as a beacon of romantic appeal to the past. In the present volume, James Whitley provides an updated guide to the site and its function from the Neolithic era to the present day. This study includes a reassessment of the palatial society of the Bronze Age, as well as an exploration of the history of Knossos in archaeological imagination. In this process, he takes a critical look at the leading assumptions of Evans and others, reconstructing how and why the received view of this ancient settlement has evolved from the Iron Age to the modern era.
