What do the numbers on nail files mean?

The numbers indicate how hard a file is. The larger these numbers are, the finer the texture is, and conversely, the smaller they are, the coarser and rougher it is. The lower the GRIT, the coarser the surface of the file, and vice versa.

  • 80 GRIT — Very coarse grains. Used for removal of acrylic, gel, and acrylic-gel. (Warning: if the material is thin, it's better to use the 100/100 GRIT)
  • 100 GRIT — Used for shaping the side walls of artificial nails and giving them shape. (Not recommended for shaping the body of the nail, it may create deep grooves.)
  • 180 GRIT — Used for shaping the natural nail as well as preparing for the application of acrylic, gel, and acrylic-gel.
  • 240 GRIT — Used for shaping the natural nail as well as for preparation.
