The Athenians were traditionally a naval power, and their hegemony was based on their large, strong, and capable fleet (180 ships). In contrast, the Spartans were mainly renowned for their excellently trained infantry forces, who fought with self-sacrifice on the battlefield. The complete destruction of the Athenian fleet at the Aegospotami rivers dramatically weakened their war capabilities and predetermined the outcome of the Peloponnesian War, as they found themselves in a suffocating siege, blocked both by sea and land due to the fortification of Decelea, which served as the base for Spartan raids. Thus, their careless choices and actions, combined with unforgivable negligence and arrogance towards their opponents, were the main causes exploited by Lysander, who crushed their fleet.
