Two military monographs. Sallust, Gaius Sallustius Crispus (86–35 BC), hailing from Amiternum, acted against Cicero and Milo as a tribune in 52 BC, joined Caesar after his expulsion from the Senate in 50 BC, and was reinstated in the Senate by Caesar, participating in his African campaign in 46 BC before being appointed governor of New Africa (Numidia). Upon his return to Rome, he escaped conviction for abuse of power, withdrew from public life, and engaged in historiography. Sallust's two extant monographs deal with the moral and political decline of Rome, one concerning the conspiracy of Catiline and the other the war with Jugurtha. Although Sallust analyzes people and events in a clear and biased manner, his works are significant and have decisively influenced later historians, especially Tacitus. Following the example of Thucydides but relying on Roman stylistic and rhetorical traditions, Sallust achieved a distinctive and impressive writing style, with vivid characterizations, especially in speeches, and a mastery of using specific episodes to illustrate large general themes. For this edition, Rolfe's text and translation for Catiline and Jugurtha have been fully revised according to the latest bibliography.
