The first parachutists in the world to be used in large numbers, the German Fallschirmjager, were at the forefront when the war broke out in 1939. They led bold attacks on strategic targets, such as the fortress at Eben Emael, allowing the following panzer to overwhelm Europe.
As a paratrooper force, the greatest achievement of the Fallschirmjager was the intense battles they fought while capturing Crete in 1941, against numerous British forces. This fiery victory meant that they were never again used in mass. Small units continued to operate with gliders and parachutes, rescuing Italian leader Mussolini and conducting raids behind American lines in the Ardennes.
Their finest hour was undoubtedly the grueling battles as they captured the monastery at Monte Cassino for months against overwhelming odds, earning the nickname "Green Devils." The German Paratroopers were undoubtedly the toughest in a hard army.
