Description

Cut Licorice Root (Liquiritiae nat radix conc, Licorice root nat cut). Also known as licorice, raggoletto, and sweet root, it is a deep-rooted perennial herbaceous plant with pinnate leaves and can reach a height of 2 meters. Its flowers come in a variety of colors (white, yellow, purple, blue) and the fruit is a dry dehiscent pod.

History: It has been known for thousands of years. In Chinese medicine, it has been used for 3000 years and is believed to renew the body. There are references from Theophrastus, who wrote about its effects on thirst, while the ancient Greeks used it for medicinal purposes.

Ingredients: Licorice contains glycosides (glycyrrhizin and glycyrrhizic acid), saponins, flavonoids, volatile oil, coumarins, asparagine, and estrogenic substances. It is characterized by its sweet taste due to glycyrrhizin.

Properties: It acts as an expectorant, soothing agent, anti-inflammatory, and mild laxative. It has a positive effect on the endocrine system and may help in controlling blood glucose levels. It is beneficial in cases of gastritis, gastric ulcers, catarrh, bronchitis, and cough.

Usage: Proper dosage is recommended, with a maximum daily dose of 10 grams. Licorice for bronchial conditions can be combined with Thyme or Marshmallow, while for gastric issues with Althaea, Comfrey, and Spiraea. It is prepared as a decoction with half to one teaspoon of root in one cup of water, simmering for 10-15 minutes.

Warning! Use is prohibited for pregnant women and for individuals taking medications based on digoxin. It is recommended to avoid consumption during hypertension and for periods longer than 6 weeks. The use of the plant requires the advice of a specialist.
