The Greek psychologist Liby (Eleftheria) Tata Arsel, daughter of a refugee from Tsantarli Pergamum, born in Mytilene and residing in Denmark, examines for the first time in Greek literature the psychological transgenerational trauma of the Asia Minor Catastrophe.

Using the tragic past of her own family as a basis and focusing on ten testimonies from three generations, she highlights the survival mechanisms used by the refugees from Asia Minor in Greece to cope with the traumas of displacement.

Partly a historical narrative, partly a psychological and social analysis, Liby Tata Arsel's book presents the ways in which the collective trauma of persecution still affects the memory, identity, and life not only of the descendants of Asia Minor refugees but also of Greek society as a whole.

Drawing on her personal history, the author addresses critical questions: Is the psychological trauma of displacement consciously or unconsciously transmitted from one generation to the next? What psychological purpose does the journey of thousands of refugees and their descendants back to their native Asia Minor serve? What kind of impact does the experience of expulsion have on the third generation in the age of globalization?
