Description

Description

The philosopher-statesman on ethics and rhetoric. Cicero (Marcus Tullius, 106–43 BC), a Roman lawyer, orator, politician, and philosopher, of whom we know more than any other Roman, lived during the turmoil of an era that saw the rise, dictatorship, and death of Julius Caesar in a shattered democracy.

His political speeches, as well as his correspondence, capture the tension and intrigue of politics, as well as the role he played in the disruptions of the time. Of approximately 106 speeches delivered before the Roman people or the Senate, 58 survive (some of them incomplete). In the 14th century, Petrarch and other Italian humanists discovered manuscripts containing more than 900 letters, of which over 800 were written by Cicero and nearly 100 from others to him.

These letters provide a revealing portrait of the man, particularly because most were not written for publication. Six rhetorical works and one in fragments survive. The philosophical works include seven significant compositions and several others, some of which are lost. There is also poetry, some original, some translated from Greek. The Loeb Classical Library edition for Cicero includes twenty-nine volumes.
