Description

Description

The philosopher-statesman regarding theology and epistemology. Cicero (Marcus Tullius, 106–43 BC), a Roman lawyer, orator, politician, and philosopher, of whom we know more about than any other Roman, lived during the fascinating time when we witnessed the rise, dictatorship, and death of Julius Caesar in a crumbling democracy. In his political speeches as well as in his correspondence, we observe the intensity, political turmoil, and his role in that tumultuous era. Of approximately 106 speeches made before the Roman people or the Senate if they were political, in front of judges if they were judicial, fifty-eight remain (some of them incomplete). In the 14th century, Petrarch and other Italian humanists uncovered manuscripts containing over 900 letters, of which more than 800 were written by Cicero and nearly 100 by others to him. These offer a revelation of the man, even more striking because most were not written for publication. Six rhetorical works survive and one more in fragments. The philosophical works include seven significant compositions that survive and several others; and some are lost. There is also poetry, some original, some as translations from Greek. The Edition of Cicero's Classical Literature Library is in twenty-nine volumes.
