Méka must capture a king dragon or die trying. The war between the island states of Kattaka and Mazemoor has left no one untouched. The nomadic people of Méka, the Ba’Suon, were driven from their homeland by the Kattakans. Those who remained were forced to live under the yoke of Kattakan, serving their greed for gold alongside the dragons with whom the Ba’Suon have a sympathetic connection. Ten years later, and under a fragile truce, Méka returns home from her exile for an ancient, necessary ritual: to capture a king dragon from the Crown Mountains to maintain balance in the wild land. However, Méka's act of compassion towards a captive dragon and Lilley, a Kattakan war veteran, soon arouses the wrath of the imperial authorities. They order the unwanted addition of a mysterious Ba’Suon traitor named Raka to accompany Méka and Lilley into the mountains. The journey is fraught with dangers from both within and without. As the conflict threatens to reignite, the survival of the Ba’Suon people, their dragons, and the land will depend on the decisions—unsubmissive or submissive—that Méka and her companions choose to make. But even Méka, related to the great dragons of the North, cannot foresee the depth of the consequences for her world.
