Description

Description

In the third decade of the 21st century, the interaction between art and society remains stronger than ever. The emergence of new media and the sociopolitical developments in the second half of the 20th century define for cultural theory and art the transition from Modernism to Postmodernism. With the gradual dominance of digital media and the widespread use of the internet, the cycle of Postmodernism comes to a close relatively quickly, at the beginning of the 21st century. What follows is defined by Posthumanist perceptions.

“You cannot experience a work of art twice just as you cannot step into the same river twice.” With this phrase, Sorgner introduces us to the formulation of a new theory of art through Posthumanist philosophy, focusing on contemporary forms of audiovisual arts, such as bioart, performance, installation, and all forms of creation with digital media.

In this particularly unique book, Sorgner attempts a paradigm shift, a disruption, the acceptance of the concept of perpetual becoming. His arguments are political and strong in terms of a philosophical dialogue that openly engages all Posthumanist currents of thought and knowledge (Critical Posthumanism, Transhumanism, and Metahumanism), through some of the most important works of contemporary audiovisual creation with new media and the most prominent artists.
