On a moonless night (imagine) in a dark cave, in the "den of Pan" across from the Acropolis (at Philopappos), intoxicated by incense, "swords," and other aphrodisiacs, Xouthos and Kreousa are initiated into love and transition from adolescence to adulthood.
Except that the daughter was fertile and the seed impatient, and the fruit of their love was born nine months later. Just as was customary then (see the myth of Oedipus), the young mother leaves the baby with its clothes, ornaments, and toys in a beautiful crib near the place where it was "conceived."
A heavy, unbearable night passed, filled with sobs. As the Sun rises above Hymettus, she goes to retrieve the baby, but it has vanished, it is no longer there. Who stole it? Some shepherds? Perhaps the beasts dismembered it? But then, where are the remains?
