The Curly Locks or Epiphyllum Phyllanthus Guatemalense Montrose is a very unusual variety with interesting self-branching growth. It is distinguished by its curly, shiny green stems. It requires soil that dries out between waterings and higher humidity than other cacti, as it is adapted to a tropical rainforest climate, which is why it should be kept away from radiators.
These plants can bloom as soon as they mature, so it's good to watch for the buds. Blooming is more likely if a suitable dormant period is provided in winter, allowing the plant to rest and not grow continuously. The Epiphyllum guatemalense monstrose is unique with stems that curl and spiral. It produces abundant white flowers that bloom at night and last only until early morning.
Blooming can easily be missed during the night, but the pink fruits that follow add color to the appearance of the plant. The Epiphyllum curly locks prefers a little extra moisture and does not tolerate dry soil. Its stems are used to capture more moisture and light. It is the result of a mutation of a plant called Epiphyllum guatemalense, and the mutated plant is called Epiphyllum monstrosa. Epiphyllum plants are often referred to as orchid cacti.
