In 2024, the Piraeus Association celebrated 130 years of operation and contribution to the city of Piraeus and to the cultural events throughout the country (1894-2024). The publication of this special commemorative book is a significant undertaking for recording and preserving the historical memory of the guardian of culture in Piraeus — and beyond — the Piraeus Association, the oldest and most historic cultural organization that continues to operate since its establishment.
Within the pages of the book, not only are facts concerning the Association presented, but the "living" history of the last 130 years in Piraeus is recorded, along with all the dramatic events that marked the city during the two world wars and what followed. The collector's volume contains hundreds of photographs, unpublished documents, and evidence that are presented for the first time in a single publication: The first School of Engineers and Radio Telegraphers of the Merchant Navy, Schools for Underprivileged Children, Successes of the Association's teams in National and World Championships, Musical and Theatrical performances.
The history of the Piraeus Association is intertwined with the historical development and social life of Piraeus. The periods of the city's growth, the commercial port, the prosperity of the bourgeoisie, social tranquility, the political and economic situation of the country, the micro and macro environment in which the Association operated and developed, are just some factors that directly or indirectly influenced its course. Hundreds, if not thousands, of names of prominent or less-known Piraeus residents parade through the membership records of the Association.
The triumphs of the Association's athletes represented and honored the city of Piraeus. Moreover, the Piraeus society, through the Association, received recognition for its efforts. From the simply underage working children who completed their basic education for free thanks to the Piraeus Association, to the great professors and academics, they embody the best proof of this institution's contribution.
