Description & Specifications

Larry Devlin took on the role of the new CIA station chief in the Congo five days after the country's independence, at a time when the army had defected and the government was collapsing. As he crossed the Congo River on a nearly empty ferry, all he could see were lines of people trying to travel in the opposite direction, out of the Congo. Within the first two weeks, he found himself on the "wrong side" of a gun as rebels played roulette with his life. In his first year, the charismatic and defiant political leader, Patrice Lumumba, was assassinated, and Devlin was suspected of being part of that assassination. He then saved the life of Joseph Désiré Mobutu, who was staging the military coup that preceded his own rise to power. Devlin found himself at the heart of Africa, fighting for the future of perhaps the continent's most strategically influential country, whose borders neighbor eight others. He met every significant political figure, from presidents to mercenaries, as he led the Cold War into one of the world's hottest zones. This is a classic political memoir from a master spy who lived through dramatic times.
