The Graf von Faber-Castell collection has presented the Pen of the Year since 2003, a limited edition pen made from precious and rare materials. The Pen of the Year 2022 is inspired by the culture, aesthetics, and religious ceremonies of the Aztecs. Their powerful empire was based on the alliance of three city-states, which was established in 1428 in what is now Mexico.
Specifically, our inspiration was guided by the myth of the creation of the world, which for the Aztecs began from the Stone of the Five Suns. The gods created and destroyed the world four times. Each world was a Sun, and each Sun had the name of one of the days of the sacred calendar.
- Sun of the Jaguar
- Sun of the Wind
- Sun of the Rain
- Sun of the Water
- Sun of Movement (the current world)
The grip of the Pen of the Year is made from obsidian, also known as volcanic glass. This volcanic rock held spiritual significance for the Aztecs and was used as protection against evil spirits.
The engraved relief figure on the turquoise stone at the back of the Pen of the Year depicts the feathered owl Mictlantecutli, the god of the underworld, and embodies the power and aesthetics associated with him. The anthracite metallic body of the Pen of the Year 2022, with a "Diamond Like Carbon" coating, features a skull pattern reminiscent of the walls of skulls at the Templo Mayor temple.
