It is referred to as "the era of revolutions," and its peak occurred in the decades before and after 1800. However, it lasted a whole century: from the American Declaration of Independence in 1776 to the major national "unifications" of Germany and Italy in the 1860s.

The Greek Revolution, which broke out in the spring of 1821, is located right in the middle of this long "era of revolutions" – and, as it later turned out, it marked its turning point. Historians were slow to recognize the crucial role played by the Greek uprising and the international recognition of Greece as a sovereign, independent state nine years later, in 1830, in this process that reshaped the geopolitical landscape of the European continent or, rather, for that matter, a large part of the world.

This book aims to explain what happened during those nine years, with their wide-ranging – and certainly unpredictable – consequences, as well as the reasons why the full significance of these events is only beginning to be appreciated today, two hundred years later.
