Description

Description

The Sonata of Ghosts by Strindberg is considered the best of the author's chamber plays and one of the most macabre in world drama. The playwright's unrealistic evocation of ghosts, vampires, and evil spirits helped introduce expressionist drama.

The play revolves around the vampire old-Hummel, who seeks to destroy the Colonel, who years ago seduced the woman he loved. Hummel introduces a Student to his peculiar company, which includes both the Colonel's wife (known as the Mummy) and her frail daughter, who draws life from hyacinths.

The scene shows the first and second floors of a modern corner house. On the left, the house continues into wings; on the right, it has a facade onto a street, which is supposed to continue into right angles towards the low stage lights.

The apartment on the ground floor ends with a round room in the corner. Above it is a balcony that belongs to the second-floor apartment. A flagpole is embedded in the balcony.

When shadows rise at the windows, a statue of a young woman made of white marble, brightly illuminated by sunlight, is visible from within. It is adorned with laurel wreaths all around. The windows on the left side of the Round Room have pots with blue, white, and red hyacinths.
