The Insta360 X5 Utility Frame is a metal protective cage designed to give the X5 extra durability and more options for mounting accessories. It is made of lightweight, high-strength aluminum, with dimensions of approximately 12 cm in height, 6 cm in width, and 4 cm in thickness, while its weight is usually around 125 grams, light enough not to affect handling but sturdy enough to provide real protection. The X5 clicks into the frame and locks with a locking mechanism, a screw on the top that you unscrew, open the top part, and after sliding the camera inside, close it and screw it back in, leaving full access to the buttons, charging port, and the camera’s cooling system.

Its operation is simple: as mentioned above, the camera is placed inside the cage and the frame works like an external skeleton that absorbs impacts and protects the X5 body from drops or rough use. The most important advantage of the Utility Frame is that it has multiple accessory mounting points, namely cold shoe mounts and female 1/4" screw mounts, for lights, microphones, mounts, selfie sticks, bike mounts, and more. This allows the user to turn the X5 into a more professional setup, especially for creators who need external audio or lighting.

The frame does not affect the 360° field of view, does not block the lens, and does not limit image quality. It is purely a protective and functional cage, not a waterproof housing, so it does not provide water resistance and is not suitable for underwater use. It adds a little to the camera’s bulk and weight, but that is expected for those who want more protection and the ability to add accessories.

Overall, the Insta360 X5 Utility Frame is a sturdy and practical solution for those who want to protect the X5 and build a more demanding setup around it. Lightweight, durable, and with many mounting points, it is ideal for creators working in tougher environments who need flexibility. I should note that the X5 photography grip is not compatible because although it attaches on top, the cable is quite short and does not reach to connect to the camera. You can combine it with the L Bracket for the X5 and mount it on the Free Framing Selfie Stick for the X5, but great care is needed when tightening because excessive pressure can cause damage. Also, in this case the weight increases as well.

In the package, besides the cage and instructions, there are also 4 extra foam microphone insulators (while 2 are already installed in the cage) as well as a lens cover. The one that comes with the camera is not compatible with the cage. The regular price is now 45 euros from the company, since the new one for the X6 will be released. It is manufactured by PGYTECH on behalf of Insta360.

There is a corresponding SmallRig version, similar construction, same quality, same accessories, but at a lower price, from SmallRig’s official site. Unfortunately, it is constantly out of stock.
