In this book by folklorist and author Soula Bozi, twenty testimonies of uprooting from men and women of Ionia, Thrace, and the City are recorded. These testimonies describe the dramatic events of their uprooting, including the terrifying events of September 1955 and the expulsions that followed in 1964.
This year marks the 70th anniversary of the September events. The book preserves the stories of the people who experienced them up close, bringing to our memory the traumas created by the atrocities and the eternal struggle of memory against oblivion.
The narratives take the form of oral testimonies, which Soula Bozi recorded in the 1990s when most of the narrators were in the later years of their lives. However, their memories remained vivid, describing the bright but also dark years they lived.
Through the narratives, the geography of the City and Asia Minor comes to life, the landmarks, the scents and tastes, the joys and sorrows, the cosmopolitanism of the City, its schools, places of gathering, as well as the public and private life of the Romiosyn in the mid-20th century.
In 1974, when the Turkish invasion occurred in Cyprus, the Romaic community in the City officially counted 7,500 individuals. Today, in 2025, the population of the City reaches twenty-five million and the community of Romios has shrunk to a minimum.
