The amino-terminal end of the N-terminal pro b-type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) is an inactive protein with an amino-terminal end of 76 amino acids that is cleaved from proBNP to release the b-type natriuretic peptide. The levels of both BNP and NT-proBNP in the blood are used for the screening and diagnosis of acute congestive heart failure (CHF) and may be useful in determining prognosis in heart failure, as both markers are usually higher in patients with worse outcomes.
The plasma concentrations of both BNP and NT-proBNP are also typically elevated in patients with asymptomatic or symptomatic left ventricular dysfunction and are associated with coronary artery disease and myocardial ischemia.
