Historical Data and Plant Morphology: Valerian (Valeriana officinalis) is a perennial plant thriving in temperate regions, known since antiquity for its calming properties. In ancient Greece and Rome, its roots were used to treat insomnia and nervous tension. The plant has a strong smell and its roots are rich in essential oils that provide its characteristic properties.

Properties:

  • Against insomnia: Improves sleep quality and reduces the time needed to fall asleep.
  • Anti-inflammatory action: Helps relieve arthritis, rheumatism, and sciatica.
  • Relaxing and anxiolytic: Relieves nervous tension and stress.
  • Relief from migraines and headaches: Helps reduce the intensity and frequency of migraines.
  • Facilitation of the digestive system: Useful in treating colitis and irritable bowel syndrome.

Usage: 1 teaspoon of ground valerian (or a small pinch of unground) is put into a container with 1 glass of water. Boil for 5–10 minutes and let it stand before straining. Consume warm, up to 3 times a day.

Origin: Greece, Imathia Prefecture (cultivated).

Storage: In a dark and cool place (5°C – 15°C).

Side Effects: Excessive consumption may cause nausea, dizziness, dry mouth, drowsiness, and headache. Use is not recommended for pregnant women, breastfeeding women, or children without medical advice.
