During the papacy of Sixtus IV, a group of Renaissance painters, such as Sandro Botticelli, Perugino, Pinturicchio, Ghirlandaio, and Rosselli, created a series of frescoes depicting the Life of Moses on the left wall and the Life of Christ on the right wall. Above this zone of frescoes, there are portraits of popes, and below it, the painting mimics hanging fabrics. The frescoes were completed in 1482, and on August 15, 1483, Sixtus IV celebrated the first mass in his chapel.
Between 1508 and 1512, under the protection of Pope Julius II, Michelangelo painted the ceiling of the chapel, a work considered one of the greatest achievements of human culture. The artist later painted The Last Judgment between 1535 and 1541. The fame of Michelangelo's paintings has attracted numerous tourists to the chapel for 500 years.
