The most eminent orator of ancient Athens. Demosthenes (384–322 BC), an orator in Athens, was a lawyer who later became a politician, defending the old glory of his city and Greece's current resistance to the rise of Philip of Macedonia. We have from him political speeches and court speeches written for parties in private and political cases.
His early reputation as the best of the Greek orators is based on his persistence, honesty, clear and sharp reasoning, and strict control of his language. In legal cases, he is the defender, while in his political speeches, he is a critic not of his opponents, but of their policies.
Demosthenes provides us with vivid images of the public and private life of his era. The Loeb Classical Library edition of Demosthenes is in seven volumes.
