Description & Specifications

Matcha was introduced to Japan from China in the 12th century by Zen Buddhist monks. The process of grinding tea leaves (Camellia sinensis) into a fine powder facilitated its transport and consumption. Initially, its taste was bitter and it was mainly used as a medicinal remedy for various ailments. Only 400 years later (in the 16th century) did the Japanese improve its taste by shading the tea bushes from the sun for several weeks before harvesting the leaves, in order to reduce the bitterness of Matcha. The Japanese tea ceremony with Matcha was a key element of Zen Buddhist monasteries, and over time, the Shogun class also adopted it. The "new" production method of Matcha, still practiced today, was developed in 1738 by Sohen Nagatani. Thanks to his work, tea became popular among other social groups as well. With continuous social changes in Japanese society, Matcha became one of the fundamental elements of Japanese culture and identity.

Note: Matcha is a stimulating beverage. People with heart conditions and high blood pressure should be cautious.

  • Ingredients: Green Matcha tea (Grade I, Japan).
