The Staghorn Fern (P. superbum) is one of the largest ferns of its kind, with a crown diameter that can reach up to 2.5 meters. It originates from eastern Australia and grows as an epiphyte on larger trees.

This fern produces two different types of leaves:

• Normal leaves
• Basal leaves, which appear on older plants, are hairy, attach to the substrate, and protect the rhizome and roots.

The normal leaves can reach almost 2 meters in length and are multiply divided, covered with hairs that protect from drying out. The older basal leaves turn brown but remain on the fern, while the new basal leaves form an open cup to collect leaf debris and fragments. These decay into compost by microorganisms, serving as food for the fern.

The Staghorn Fern grows more beautifully when attached or mounted to the side of a support, such as cork, and can develop the characteristic shape observed in nature.
