The unripe fruit is toxic, so harvesting should only be done when it has developed the correct colors. The flesh is soft, juicy, and very fragrant, with a taste reminiscent of a combination of melon and cucumber. The fruits usually weigh between 100 and 300 grams. The fruits are rich in vitamin C and iodine.

It is a perennial plant, related to tomato and eggplant, although it is often grown as an annual in temperate climates. Juicy and productive, with a flavor similar to honeydew melon crossed with cucumber, this perennial sweet cucumber thrives in frost-free climates or can be grown throughout spring and summer in cooler areas.
