Description

Description

This book offers a light glimpse into life in the city of Bath during the Roman era, almost two thousand years ago. Back then, the city was called Aquae Sulis (the Waters of Sul), with Sul being the local deity sacred to the tribe living in this area.

Although the stories and most of the characters are fictional, the general details about the Romans are true. Information about how they lived, what they believed, their ceremonies, the medicines they used (get ready to shiver!), what they ate, and what they wore have been drawn from many reliable sources.

The stories are mostly playful, because, despite the importance the Romans had, they themselves could be quite troublesome! They kept slaves, slaughtered people and animals in the arena just for entertainment, and oppressed other nations to expand their Empire.

Thus, these stories generally mock the Romans, many of whom were illiterate or semi-literate, which often had serious consequences, as the stories reveal.

It is hoped that reading about life in Aquae Sulis will be enjoyable and that you will learn some surprising facts and perhaps a few Latin words!
