Strelitzia - Care Instructions

  • Light: Strelitzia grows best in bright, indirect and direct light. Too much direct sunlight in summer can burn the leaves and damage the flowers. It can remain for a short period in partial shade.
  • Water: Keep the soil moist during warmer months and water when the top 4-5 cm of soil dries out. During colder months, let the soil dry out a bit more. Do not overwater, as excess moisture can harm the root system.
  • Temperature: Prefers temperatures between 15-30 °C, but can withstand down to 7 °C.
  • Humidity: Prefers increased humidity conditions, but can survive in lower humidity as well.
  • Fertilization: Apply a balanced fertilizer 2-3 times a year for green and flowering plants.
  • Growing medium/Repotting: Repot every 1-2 years using good quality soil for indoor and outdoor plants.
  • Care tips: The leaves will naturally separate as the plant matures, allowing light to reach the lower parts of the plant. Rotate the plant occasionally to encourage its growth.
  • Air purification: The broader leafy plants will filter toxins from the air.
  • Height and growth rate: It is a fast-growing plant under ideal conditions. Outdoors it can reach up to 2 m, while when grown indoors, it can reach up to 1.5 m.
  • Toxicity: Strelitzia is toxic if ingested.
  • Origin: South Africa.
