The opposition—previously established in the first chapter—between the two forms of Novelle and Kurzgeschichte allows for the distinction of precise successive phases within Heinrich Mann's production.

This discovery primarily leads to a reassessment of the place of the short story in this author's work. Contrary to common opinion, this part of his literary oeuvre is by no means marginal. The detailed examination of these often neglected works thus complements and enriches the image of a complex author who never ceased to innovate in narrative aesthetics.
