The Silent Songs are the poetic collection of Fotis Paschalis (literary pseudonym of Theodorakis Zoras), written between 1938 and 1943. This edition is the first to publish his poetic works, already known from the publication of 'Provincials' (1938).
Fotis Paschalis was executed by the German occupying forces in Patras in 1943, and since then his poems were missing, even though their existence was known. Takis Doxas, who anthologized him in 'The Elis Journal' in 1963, wrote: “He left some of his poems in the hands of foreign but beloved ones, as well as his collection of thirty poems which he announced for publication. However, few of those saw the light of publicity until today.”
The Silent Songs came to light seventy-five years later, as a completely handwritten and handmade book, bound and carefully crafted by the poet himself. The manuscript was preserved thanks to Niki (Nikoula) Syriopoulou, Paschalis's fiancée at the time, who kept it until her death. It was found among her belongings in 2018 by her niece, Georgia Syriopoulou, along with family heirlooms.
The publication of the complete collection is not only of literary significance but also a spiritual and historical testimony after eighty years of silence.
The Silent Songs are published by Metronomos Editions with a literary epilogue by Sotiris Trivizas and an additional note on the history of the book from 1943 to the present by Georgia Syriopoulou.
