This work analyzes the importance of social relationships in the case of illness within an urban environment. The study was conducted in Niangon Sud, a socioeconomically and ethnically diverse area of Abidjan metropolis (Ivory Coast).

The author examines the available therapeutic options and their utilization by the population, the role of social networks in managing illness, the expectations placed on the various actors within these networks, and the actual support received by patients.

The influence of variables such as "age," "gender," and "socioeconomic status," as well as the impact of the type of illness (chronic disease, mental illness, HIV/AIDS) on the support provided, are considered. Descriptions of specific cases highlight the severe consequences that illness and/or lack of support can cause and demonstrate that social relationships can not only offer support but also have negative effects on individuals.
