The hophornbeam is a deciduous tree that reaches 5-10 meters in height and is characteristic of the Greek and Mediterranean countryside. It has beautiful heart-shaped leaves and blooms in spring (March - April) with impressive purple, pink, or fuchsia flowers. The flowers cover the entire trunk and branches before the leaves emerge and appear in clusters on the bare shoots, even directly on the trunk.

The hophornbeam withstands drought conditions, high temperatures, and severe cold (down to -25 °C). It is often used in parks and sidewalks for ornamental purposes due to its resistance to drought and air pollution.
