The Germans were known for their fierce and brutal nature, as mentioned by Tacitus, who contrasted the hardy barbarian warriors with the degenerated and refined people of the civilized world. Even if this description was somewhat exaggerated for dramatic effect, their reputation as terrifying warriors is undeniable.
Even the Gauls, who were not so unskilled, suffered from endless raids and periodic invasions by the Germans. The Gauls soon saw the advantages of participating in the Roman Empire regarding effective border control.
The Germans primarily fought as foot soldiers, but there was also a core of warriors—possibly an aristocratic elite—who fought on horseback. German horses were considered to be as tough and wild as their riders, and the German cavalry usually prevailed in battles against other mounted warriors. They were so sought after that Roman cavalry guards often consisted of Germans.
