Tradescantia sillamontana 'Variegata', also known as the "cobweb plant," features a green-white-yellow variegated pattern with leaves covered in dense white hairs. Originating from Mexico, it has a unique character—the woolly leaves invite touch. It is drought-tolerant and ideal for hanging baskets or sunny areas.
Care Instructions:
- Light: Requires direct sunlight or very bright, indirect light to maintain the dense white hairs. In low light, the hairs reduce and the leaves remain mostly green, as the plant produces more chlorophyll for photosynthesis. The optimal exposure is 4-6 hours of direct sun daily.
- Watering: Water rarely—allow the substrate to dry completely between waterings. In summer, water every 7-10 days; in winter, every 14-21 days. Unlike other Tradescantia, sillamontana is sensitive to standing water due to its dry origin. Avoid watering the leaves directly to prevent washing away the white hairs; water the substrate instead.
- Humidity: Tolerates dry air well. The woolly hairs act as natural water retention. No misting required, making it suitable for apartments with intense winter heating.
- Substrate: Needs airy soil with excellent drainage, similar to cactus/succulent mix. Use universal substrate + 30% perlite + 10% coarse sand. pH 6.0-7.5. Excellent drainage is essential.
- Temperature: Optimal range is 15-25°C, minimum 8°C. It tolerates lower temperatures better than many Tradescantia due to its high-altitude origin from Mexico.
- Fertilizers: Use cactus/succulent fertilizer diluted to half strength monthly during the growing season. Do not fertilize in winter. Excess nitrogen reduces the variegation and quality of the woolly hairs.
- Repotting: Every 2-3 years in spring, into pots only slightly larger.
- Pruning: Regular pruning promotes branching and keeps the plant dense. Long stems can be propagated by cuttings, rooting easily in 2-3 weeks.
- Common Problems: Leaves without white hairs indicate insufficient light (move to sun). Yellow, soft leaves signal overwatering (root suffocation). Loss of variegation in new leaves means too little light. Mites may appear in very dry air.
