The begonia 'Firefly' is a collectible rhizomatous begonia, with small leaves in shades of copper, brick, and warm pink, with veins in dark tones and a slight silver sheen. The underside of the plant, in a wine color, illuminates the plant when there is backlighting, and when mature, it emits clusters of pale pink flowers above the foliage. It requires bright indirect light and humid air.
Care instructions:
- Light: Bright but indirect light. An ideal location is a window facing east or west, filtered through a thin curtain. The warm tones and silver sheen develop best in good light, but it requires protection from direct midday sun, which can damage the tender leaves and fade the copper tones.
- Temperature: Thrives between 18 and 24 °C. Prefers stable temperatures and cold drafts from doors or windows in winter should be avoided.
- Watering: Water when the top 2–3 cm of soil has dried out. Water carefully along the edge of the pot, avoiding the rhizomatous stem and the center of the plant. Excess moisture causes rhizome rot.
- Humidity: Loves humid air, around 50–60% or higher. Group it with other plants or use a humidifier in dry spaces.
- Substrate: Use a light, airy mixture with good drainage. The pot should be wide and shallow with drainage holes.
- Fertilizer: During the growing season, from spring to autumn, fertilize every 2–4 weeks with a strong liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength.
- Propagation: Very easy from leaf or rhizome cuttings. Cut a healthy leaf with its stem or a section of rhizome with roots.
When small problems arise, these are signs to be read, not obstacles. White powders appear when the air is excessively humid. Burnt leaf tips indicate a need for more humidity or less direct light. These adjustments are minor and the plant responds quickly.
