The eleven short stories in the collection form a unified narrative world, where lonely, introspective, and unstable narrators keep vigil, observe, and insistently return to memory, attempting, in a manner of speaking, to order reality and shape a sense of meaning and identity. Their effort, however, reveals the unreliability of memory and language, as well as the complete inability to communicate. They accept doubt, pain, but also stubbornness as components of human existence. With sober equanimity, they balance between the tragic and the comic. Within a fragile atmosphere pierced by bursts of undercurrent humor and melancholy, decay, loss, alienation, and falsehood emerge—not as moral deviation, but as an aesthetic and spiritual choice—the fatigue of modern man, the need for closeness, and the doomed-to-fail attempts at reconciliation with the past.
I confess that I am perversely curious, and when I find the right opportunity I readily yield, as one may infer, to the temptation of curiosity, but I like to believe that I possess that kind of curiosity which merely stirs the mind kindly or perhaps a little mockingly, keeping it constantly alert without burdening it with labyrinthine associations aimed at psychological depth.
