Portable RF Detector for Identifying Wireless Signal Sources
The Techstar RF detector is a compact device designed to identify and approximately locate equipment transmitting radio signals in the 100–2400 MHz range.
It can be used to check areas such as hotel rooms, offices, homes, conference rooms, cars, changing rooms, or other places where you want to detect active radio sources.
RF Detection in the 100–2400 MHz Range
The detector uses radio energy detection technology to identify nearby active wireless signals.
Stated frequency range: 100 MHz–2400 MHz
Depending on the frequency and characteristics of the transmitter, the device may respond to various types of equipment transmitting within this range, such as:
- Compatible wireless cameras
- Radio transmitters
- RF-emitting surveillance devices
- Some wireless equipment
- Some communication devices
- Other radio transmitters compatible with the detector’s range
The detector does not automatically identify the exact type of device; it indicates the presence of a detectable RF transmission.
Detection Range of up to 10 Meters
Under favorable conditions, the manufacturer states a maximum detection distance of up to 10 meters.
The effective distance may vary depending on:
- Transmitter power
- Frequency used
- Antenna position
- Obstacles between the detector and the source
- Level of radio interference in the area
- Device orientation
- Characteristics of the detected source
For more accurate locating, it is recommended to scan the area gradually and compare alarm intensity at different positions.
Two Detection Modes: Long Range and Short Range
The detector has two dedicated buttons:
- Button A - Long Range: Designed for an initial scan of a larger area and approximate detection of RF presence.
- Button B - Short Range: Designed for close-up scanning and can be used after identifying the approximate area to narrow down the search.
The combination of the two modes provides a simple search process: general scanning, moving closer to the source, and local confirmation.
Adjustable Telescopic Antenna
The built-in antenna can be extended according to the operating mode and the area being checked.
This allows for more effective reception of radio signals and makes it easier to move the detector around a room to identify areas with stronger signal intensity.
For accurate locating, the antenna and detector positions can be adjusted gradually as the user approaches the source.
Audible Alarm and Indicator Light
The detector features:
- Indicator light
- Audible alarm
- Separate controls for the two detection modes
When the device detects a sufficiently strong RF signal, the alarm helps the user identify the area where the source is located.
For more accurate scanning, it is recommended to move the device slowly and scan repeatedly from multiple directions.
Useful for Detecting Active Wireless Cameras
The detector can help identify hidden cameras that transmit wirelessly and use a frequency within the device’s detection range.
It can be used to check objects and areas such as:
- Power outlets and adapters
- Light fixtures
- Decorative objects
- Furniture
- Electronic equipment
- Clocks
- Smoke detectors
- Areas around the bed
- Areas around the desk
- Other objects that could contain a radio transmitter
Important: If a camera does not transmit an RF signal, is switched off, records locally only, or operates outside the 100–2400 MHz range, this RF detector will probably not detect it.
