The Vanda orchid in a glass vase grows without soil or bark: it rests on the rim of a clear vase, with its thick, silvery roots visible, and bears 5–10 large, flat, intricately patterned flowers on an upright stem. Flower colour can be selected on the page — pure white, vivid purple, or indigo, a dark violet-blue. It needs a short water bath twice a week, and its roots show when they have had enough: they turn from silver to green. With plenty of light, it blooms 2–3 times a year.
Care instructions
- A Vanda in glass is grown without a growing medium. Caring for it is simple: fill the vase with lukewarm water, let the roots soak for 20–30 minutes until they turn green, then empty all the water. Leave the vase empty between baths — the roots need air and should never be left standing in water.
- Light: Very bright light, more than a Phalaenopsis needs. Ideally, place it near an east- or west-facing window, where it will get 2–3 hours of gentle morning or evening sun. In summer, draw a sheer curtain during midday: the glass vase intensifies direct sunlight. Light green leaves indicate that the light is sufficient.
- Temperature: 18–30 °C, with slightly cooler nights. It does best above 15 °C, so in winter keep it away from cold windowsills and draughts.
- Water: Fill the vase with lukewarm, low-hardness water — rainwater or filtered water — until the roots are covered, without letting the water reach the base of the leaves. Leave it for 20–30 minutes, then empty all the water. Twice a week in summer, once a week in winter. Green roots are healthy. When they turn silver again, it is time for the next bath.
- Humidity: 60–80% around the roots; the glass vase maintains a humid microclimate. In dry air, mist the roots in the morning so they can dry by evening. Keep the bases of the leaves dry — if water gets in there, blot it with a paper towel.
- Growing medium: None. The Vanda is grown with its roots exposed, as bark or soil would suffocate them.
- Fertilising: Dilute orchid fertiliser to quarter strength in the bath water, every second or third watering from March to September. In winter, no more than once a month.
- Propagation: By keikis — plantlets that appear at the base of the stem and can be removed once they have 2–3 roots of their own, at least 5 cm long. They are rare indoors.
