Dionaea muscipula, also known as the famous Venus flytrap, is the only species in the genus Dionaea and one of the most fascinating carnivorous plants in the world. Its traps—modified leaves that snap shut quickly around insects—represent one of the fastest movements in the plant kingdom. Available in 5.5 cm pots, it makes an impressive specimen for beginners and experienced collectors alike.
Care instructions
- Grows as a compact rosette with 5 to 10 active leaves at a time.
- Under optimal conditions, the rosette can reach 10–12 cm in diameter.
- It has an underground rhizome that continuously produces new leaves during the growing season (spring to autumn).
- In winter, Dionaea enters a mandatory dormancy period lasting 3–4 months, during which growth slows down.
- With proper care, it can live for 20 years or more and naturally propagates through stolons.
Light: Direct sunlight for at least 4–6 hours a day. An ideal location is a south- or west-facing window.
Temperature: 20–30°C in summer, 2–10°C in winter.
Watering: The growing medium should be kept constantly moist using the tray method.
Humidity: 50–80%. It tolerates normal ambient humidity as long as the growing medium is kept moist.
Growing medium: A mixture of sphagnum moss and perlite (1:1).
Fertilizer: Do not fertilize, as Dionaea absorbs nutrients from trapped insects.
Propagation: Can be propagated through stolons, seeds, or leaf cuttings in moist growing medium.
