Description

Description

Summary Pragmatics is the branch of Linguistics that deals with the use of language in real communication situations. Specifically, it studies how the linguistic and extralinguistic environment, the relationships, and the social roles of the participants in each communicative context affect the production and understanding of meaning, as well as how more is communicated than what is explicitly said.

This book serves as an introduction to the scientific discussions in this field. However, as a significant portion of interest in recent decades has focused on intercultural communication and the difficulties faced by students of a language as a second/foreign language in understanding and producing pragmatic meaning, a substantial part of the book is dedicated to issues of acquisition and teaching of pragmatic phenomena.

In addition to a critical overview of the phenomena, it includes activities aimed at better understanding and internalizing them, as well as a series of suggestions and activities for language teaching. Consequently, this book is intended for undergraduate and graduate students, researchers, those who teach a language as a second/foreign language, and anyone interested in how linguistic communication takes place.
