In 1980, Michalis X. Fotopoulos and his wife Maria Fotopoulou started as amateurs with five beehives in their garden in Akrithochori, Messinia. They produced honey for their family's needs and to share with relatives and friends. By 1983, the number of beehives increased to 200 and was transferred to the area of Messinian Mani and the mountains of Taygetus.
In 1994, their son Charalampos Fotopoulos took over the business after attending educational seminars on beekeeping. Fotopoulos Beekeeping "Taygetus Honey" has been certified with ISO 22000:2005 for the production, packaging, and trade of beekeeping products.
