With the safe distance provided by the removal from the acute phases of the language issue and mainly with the sobriety guaranteed by the official resolution of the problem by the Greek State in 1976, we can today, with new approaches of the 21st century, study the issue that has troubled Greeks and Greece primarily over the last two centuries.
Without tensions and fanaticism, with the objective perspective of the researcher-scholar and the certainty of a definitively resolved issue in the safest space, in the consciousness of the Greek citizen. No one today would dare to raise the issue of language, in the sense of the dispute between Katharevousa and Demotic. Consciously or unconsciously, those who complain today about the level of our language use - and there are many - are, in reality, raising a quality issue in the way we use the language in our communication (both written and oral), and certainly not a question of choosing one form or another of the Greek language, as was the case when our language issue remained unresolved.
Under these circumstances (favorable for a sober view of the issue) and given that in 1976 the decision for the resolution of the language issue was unanimously taken by all the MPs and parties in Parliament, the initiative of the Foundation of the Hellenic Parliament to study the language issue from a perspective that would not have been possible previously during the turmoil of the language is both understandable and commendable - I believe.
In this spirit and in response to this initiative, the present, purely scientific, effort aims at a modern examination of the language issue. What has been sought is to ensure a multifaceted and polyphonic view of the language issue in its evolution by specialized scholars, who analyze a variety of topics and aspects of the language, including the personalities who played significant roles in it.
The purpose of the work is to examine comprehensively and illuminate concepts, relationships, and situations that have not always been examined from the perspective that today's distance from the events and the intervening scientific research in numerous related fields allows. Thus, with great care, we observe how a romantic movement of return to an older form of the Greek language (Atticism) gives rise to a major issue of fragmentation in the use of Greek that has persisted for centuries (linguistic dualism) to evolve in the last two centuries into a linguistic conflict characterized by civil division, in the well-known language issue.
